This will enable you to escape crap jobs and limited future working for KFC." Escalante had to fight with the principal numerous times, for being hard and demanding. You were born with two strikes against you. The kids who'd failed overall, including math, were challenged. The teacher, Jaime Escalante (note Wiki)-Bolivian background, immigrant to US- challenged them to learn calculus to pass the Advanced Placement (AP) exam that universities look at (and in effect credit you for one year of university work in the given area). The point isn't that the grade 12 kids complied, or even stood firm. High school which most Latino kids do not finish, or if barely, never go to university ("college" in US).

Or it could be that the originator (AE) simply was vague (see Free Dictionary (AE) above) as to the meaning of the original. I suspect that it is possible that the originator of the latter had some vague memory of the former floating in his mind that attracted him to its use. The former died out well before the latter appeared, and the use of " deliver" in the latter sense seems to be quite recent. It is difficult to say how closely the two uses are connected. In the context of the film (movie) I assume that it is the latter. In which " stand" = stand firm be resolute, and " and deliver" = "and give your best".
